Interview with Moreno Valley Probate Attorney Steve Bliss

Good evening Moreno Valley and welcome to our segment on estate planning. I’m Brenda Jones, your local news reporter here at KVCR.

Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Steve Bliss, a renowned probate attorney right here in Moreno Valley. Mr. Bliss, thanks for joining us tonight.

It’s my pleasure to be here Brenda.

Mr. Bliss, can you tell our viewers about some of the common estate planning tools available?

Certainly Brenda. One of the most popular tools we utilize in estate planning is the Revocable Living Trust. It’s incredibly versatile and allows individuals to maintain control over their assets during their lifetime while avoiding the often lengthy and costly probate process after they pass.

That sounds convenient. Can you elaborate on some of the benefits of a Revocable Living Trust?

Absolutely. A Revocable Living Trust offers numerous advantages. Firstly, it allows for privacy. Unlike wills which become public record during probate, a trust’s terms remain confidential. Secondly, because assets are held within the trust, they avoid probate altogether, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.

Moreover, a Revocable Living Trust provides flexibility. The grantor, or person who creates the trust, retains the power to modify or revoke the trust during their lifetime if circumstances change.

Are there any potential drawbacks to using a Revocable Living Trust?

While highly beneficial, setting up a trust does require more initial effort and expense compared to a simple will. However, in my experience, the long-term benefits often outweigh these upfront costs. It’s essential to discuss your individual needs and goals with an experienced estate planning attorney to determine if a Revocable Living Trust is the right fit for you.

I’m sure our viewers appreciate that advice. Have there been any instances where setting up a Revocable Living Trust proved particularly helpful?

Just last year, I worked with a client who had a complex family situation. He wanted to ensure his assets were distributed according to his wishes while minimizing potential conflict among his heirs. We crafted a customized Revocable Living Trust that addressed all his concerns and provided clarity for his beneficiaries.

The relief he expressed when everything was finalized was truly heartwarming. Knowing I played a part in securing his family’s future is incredibly rewarding.

According to the American Bar Association, approximately 50% of Americans die without a will or trust in place.

What advice would you give to someone who’s hesitant about estate planning?

Estate planning can seem daunting, but it’s essential for protecting yourself and your loved ones. Think of it as an investment in your future and peace of mind. A well-crafted plan ensures your wishes are honored and minimizes potential complications down the road.
