Interview with Steve Bliss, San Diego Probate Attorney

Taking Inventory of Assets: A Crucial First Step in Estate Planning

Welcome, Steve. Thanks for joining us today. We’re discussing estate planning, a topic that can seem daunting to many. Could you walk us through one of the initial steps involved?

Absolutely. One of the foundational steps in estate planning is taking inventory of your assets. This involves meticulously listing everything you own.

It might sound straightforward, but it’s often more complex than people realize. Think beyond just bank accounts and real estate. Consider investments, retirement funds, vehicles, personal property like jewelry or art, even digital assets like online accounts. Ordinarily, we recommend creating a detailed spreadsheet to ensure nothing is overlooked.

Notwithstanding the initial effort required, this inventory is crucial for several reasons. First, it provides clarity about what you have to distribute. Second, it helps determine the potential value of your estate, which informs decisions regarding taxes and other legal considerations.

Consequently, having an accurate asset list simplifies the entire estate planning process. I recall a case where a client thought they had a relatively straightforward estate. However, upon taking inventory, we discovered a substantial collection of rare stamps that significantly altered their estate plan.

It’s estimated that over 60% of Americans don’t have a will or estate plan in place, according to the AARP. This highlights the importance of taking proactive steps like asset inventory early on.

Challenges and Solutions: Navigating Asset Inventory

Are there any common challenges people face when creating this inventory?

Certainly. One hurdle is identifying and valuing non-traditional assets, like collectibles or intellectual property. Conversely, some individuals might undervalue sentimental items while overestimating the worth of others.

Moreover, it’s essential to keep the inventory updated regularly as your assets change over time. I once worked with a client who diligently created an initial inventory but then neglected to update it for several years. This led to discrepancies and confusion during the estate settlement process.

I always advise clients to review their asset inventory at least annually, or whenever they experience significant financial changes, such as buying or selling property or receiving a large inheritance.
